Review of Perfume Novel
The Perfume novel takes place in 18th century France, where a young woman named Gracedieu moves to Paris and becomes a perfumer. She falls in love with an artist who uses her to create his masterpiece: the perfect scent.
The book is divided into “The Confession of the Scent” and “The Confession of the Perfume.” In the first part, the author tells us how he met an older man named Jean Baptiste Grenouille and how he became interested in him.
Furthermore, he tells us how Grenouille was born with no smell and how he was mocked for this by other children. He also tells us about his parents’ death when he was young. Growing up, he became obsessed with scents and started collecting them from people around him: their sweat, saliva, or blood.
He killed many people because they refused to give him their scent. But finally found someone who agreed to cooperate with him in exchange for money and sexual favors.
In the second part of this book, we find out that Grenouille’s mother died while giving birth to him and that his father abandoned him shortly after.
