The book follows the story of Dexter Morgan, an undercover police officer. He also works as a forensic analyst specializing in blood spatter patterns. He is also a serial killer who only kills other murderers. The story starts when Dexter’s foster sister Deborah discovers that he has been killing people and taking pictures of them with her camera.
She tells him that she will keep his secret as long as he doesn’t get caught. She then decides to use her knowledge of his secret to blackmail him into helping her solve cases at the police station where they both work.
Dexter finds himself drawn into an investigation into a string of murders committed by a man known as “The Ice Truck Killer”. The two form a bond over their shared interest in criminology. Still, when Deborah becomes romantically involved with another officer on the case, they begin to go wrong.
