Overview of A Painted House Book
As we mentioned earlier, A Painted House is a novel by American author John Grisham. It was first published in 2001 by Doubleday, a division of Random House. The story takes place in 1951 and 1952 in the fictional town of Carpenter, Kansas. The book begins as three-year-old Luke Chandler and his older brother Mark are dropped off at home from school by their father, Jess, a cotton farmer.
Jess goes to work painting houses for the recent flood victims in town. As he works, he watches his children play outside with the other children of Carpenter’s residents while they wait for him to finish working so they can go inside and eat supper. It is one of several scenes showing how close-knit the community is; everyone helps each other despite their differences.
I liked this book because it was very descriptive and had great details that made me feel like I was there with the characters during their daily lives. The author wrote using an excellent tone that made me feel like I knew what was going on with the characters, even though there were times when they were not present throughout most of the storyline.
